How to Start a Podcast: Launch Tips and a Free Voice-Activated Teleprompter

A podcast or video show is a good way to build an audience and share your message. The choices pile up fast. What microphone should you buy? How do you write a script that sounds like a conversation instead of a lecture? And if you search for a teleprompter app or video recorder, many of the results want a subscription, a sign-up and an upload of your private recordings to their servers.

VocalScroll is free, needs no sign-up, and keeps your scripts and recordings on your device.

This guide covers how to launch your show and where VocalScroll fits in.

1. Essential tips for starting a successful podcast

Before you press Record, get three things right.

A. Focus on a micro-niche

Don't try to talk to everyone. Pick a specific topic, such as email marketing for B2B software or retro indie game development on Linux. A narrow topic is easier to find and easier to keep coming back to.

B. Master the "conversational script"

Reading a script on camera often sounds stiff. Write your outline as conversational bullet points, or write the script exactly how you speak. Use short sentences and active verbs.

C. Build a lightweight gear rig

You do not need a studio to start. A USB microphone (like the Blue Snowball or Audio-Technica ATR2100x), a desktop boom arm and a ring light give you clear voice and video.

2. Problems with cloud teleprompters

Once your script is ready and your camera is set up, the next problem is delivery. Looking back and forth between a laptop screen and the camera lens breaks eye contact with your audience.

Cloud-based teleprompter platforms solve that, with three drawbacks:

  1. Subscriptions: Many charge a monthly fee, which adds up for a new podcaster who only needs scrolling text and local clips.
  2. Privacy: They ask you to upload drafts, private audio and camera files to their servers. That is a risk if you discuss confidential business plans or unreleased announcements.
  3. Connection problems: If your Wi-Fi drops or the server lags, cloud speech recognition can freeze mid-session.

3. VocalScroll: a free voice-activated teleprompter

VocalScroll answers all three.

Free, with no sign-up

There are no paywalls, no premium tiers and no credit cards. Open the app and use the teleprompter, Scripts and the recorder.

On-device privacy

VocalScroll runs speech recognition on your own computer or phone, using WebAssembly (WASM). Your scripts and recordings stay on your device.

Speech model cached on your device

The speech engine runs in your browser. The first time you use a language, VocalScroll downloads that language's speech model and keeps it on your device. After that, voice-activated scrolling and recording need no further download.

Voice mastering

The Voice enhancer runs on your device. When you play back or export a recording, it removes background noise and echo, softens breaths and harsh S sounds, evens out your level, and applies filters, EQ, a compressor and a limiter. Pick the Podcast preset for a warm, even spoken-word sound.

4. How to record your podcast with VocalScroll

To record an episode:

  1. Open VocalScroll: Go to VocalScroll.com or launch the installed app.
  2. Write or load a script: Type or paste your outline in the Studio's Script panel, or open Scripts to load one you saved.
  3. Set up camera and mic: Pick your USB microphone under Audio in the Inspector. Switch on Camera if you want video.
  4. Choose Voice and hit Start: Set the Voice/Paced control to Voice and click Start. The prompter starts listening.
  5. Read naturally: The prompter tracks your voice and scrolls the text with you. When you pause, the text pauses.
  6. Export your take: When you finish, press Stop and open the take in Takes. Choose a preset on the Voice tab, then export from the Export tab: mastered video, or a WAV for audio-only shows.

Start your first episode

You don't need subscription software to read a script on camera. VocalScroll works for solo podcast episodes, client updates, YouTube essays and training courses. Load your first script and record an episode.
