Offline Mode: Running Your Teleprompter Anywhere Without Internet

A spotty connection can interrupt a recording session or stall a script mid-speech. VocalScroll is a Progressive Web App (PWA), so once it has loaded it keeps running without a connection.

A background script in your browser, called a service worker, saves the app files on your device. This guide covers how that works, how to install the app, and what to expect offline.

Speech recognition runs on your device. VocalScroll downloads the speech model for a language the first time you use it and keeps it on your device. Load the app and pick your language once while you are online, and you can record offline from then on.

1. How local storage works

The first time you visit VocalScroll, your browser downloads the core app files and saves them on your device.

  • Cached files: the service worker caches the app, its styles and scripts, the fonts and the home page. Guides you open are cached as you read them.
  • Loading from your device: when you return, the browser pulls these files from the cache instead of requesting them over the internet, so the app opens offline.
  • Updates: when you are next online, the service worker checks for a newer version in the background and updates your local files.

2. Installing the app to your device

You can install VocalScroll on your computer, tablet or phone. The installed app opens without the browser's address bar and tabs.

Here is how to install it on each platform:

3. Privacy benefits

VocalScroll keeps your scripts, recordings and speech processing on your device, which suits sensitive productions:

  • Scripts stay on your device: corporate announcements, pre-release tech reviews and private journals are stored on your own hardware.
  • Recordings stay on your device: they are saved locally in Takes and you download them to your own folders, so VocalScroll holds no cloud copy of your videos.
  • Nothing streams out: your audio and video are processed on your device and are not streamed to a server.

Once the app and your language's speech model are on your device, you can record on an airplane or in a remote location with no signal.
